It could be herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV 1) or herpes simplex virus type-2 (HSV 2) that might cause genital herpes. Cold sores on lips could be caused due to HSV 1 or HSV 2 as well as on genitals. Cold sores are often caused by HSV 1, while genital sores are caused often by HSV 2.
A break present in the skin can make the virus to enter the body and infect the person or it can be through moist regions (mucous membranes) like the vagina, anus and mouth.
Each small break present in the skin would allow the virus to have the body infected. Hence, there could be spread of herpes from or to the anus, mouth or genitals while carrying out sexual activities or if herpes sores comes in direct contact with it.
If the person has a blister or herpes sore, then there are more chances of the herpes being spread. However, majority of the people do have time periods (week after and week before the outbreak), when still the virus can be spread although, the symptoms are not present.
Some people could spread infection since, they might not realize of being infected with herpes sore. Different symptoms could be present like painful urination, which is not realized as part of the outbreak.
